Keeping The Roof Over Mount Albert Scouts
The Mount Albert branch of Scouts NZ may have been active for over 90 years, but their base in New North Road was literally falling apart. In urgent need of re-roofing and renovation, the 1st Mt Albert St Jude’s Scout Group applied to the Million Dollar Mission for help. Million Dollar Mission is an intiative set up by The Trusts to give back to West Auckland community groups.
Famous for providing adventurous activities, leadership skills and community service, the Mount Albert Scout Group’s base had, however, seen better days. The bathroom and kitchen facilities were in urgent need of modernisation, but the biggest challenge was the roof and internal guttering. In fact, repairing broken guttering and blocking up leaks was becoming more of a regular activity for the scouts than the traditional knot tying or kite making.
Funding of $19,095 from the Million Dollar Mission has, however, made a big contribution to the modernisation and upgrade of the scout hall.
According to Group Leader, Richard Stanton, ‘The building is now stronger and safer and is ready for the next 50 years.’
‘The extra funding from the Million Dollar Mission means that we have been able to find a permanent solution rather than a stop gap that wouldn’t solve the problem in the long term. We have also been able to update some wiring which had become water damaged which is an added bonus.’
With about 60 children and young people belonging to the scout group across various age groups from 6 to 17, 1st Mount Albert St Jude’s can now concentrate on what it does best, which is developing leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills in our young people.
‘We are looking forward to our centenary,’ advises Richard, ‘and we are happy to know that the roof will still be over our heads!’
