Game on! Te Atatū Intermediate’s new multi-sports turf

Te Atatū Intermediate is at the heart of the local community in more ways than one. Centrally located, the school also nurtures and develops 460 local tamariki in years 7 and 8.

‘We teach the core curriculum, but we also provide opportunities to develop our students into the best they can be,’ says Principal Lloyd Evans.

The school offers a range of specialist subjects, including creative media, hard materials, food technology, coding and robotics. Te Atatū Intermediate also excels at music, with award-winning concert bands, string ensembles, rock bands and kapa haka.

‘At Te Atatū Intermediate, we believe in getting kids off their phones and devices and exploring other opportunities,’ says Lloyd. Physical activity is a big part of that. Lloyd says that encouraging children to be active not only improves their wellbeing but also supports their learning in the classroom.

The school offers a wide variety of sports. Netball, kī-o-rah football, basketball, and table tennis are just some of the options available.

However, the school had an old concrete court that was under-used. Lloyd advises that it was something of a dead area in need of some serious TLC.

Applying to the Your West Support Fund resulted in $10,000 of funding to refurbish the disused court. The area has now been transformed into a modern multi-sport turf. Furthermore, the addition of bench seating means it can also be used for performances and meetings.

'The whole area has been revitalised and has enhanced the school environment,' says Lloyd. Every day, swarms of children head to the new court during morning teas and lunch breaks. And the area is also used during physical education lessons, with futsal, hockey and dodgeball now added to the sports roster.

Even better, the new court is available for general community use. ‘We have close links with Te Atatū Football Club,’ says Lloyd. He adds that the football club provided goals, and the court is also available for their use.

With top-class facilities and enthusiastic teachers and students, Te Atatū Intermediate may well be nurturing the next generation of elite athletes. Watch this space!
