Brotherhood Continues developing local leaders

Community organisation Brotherhood Continues Trust is developing the next generation of local leaders. Since 2021, the trust has delivered the Maka Leadership and school holiday programme to rangatahi in The West.

'We empower young people to become positive community members,' declares co-founder Barney Wikitera-Kuki. Barney is just one of the enthusiastic team of dedicated volunteers who keep the show on the road.

Brotherhood Continues uses youth development principles combined with martial arts, such as Muay Thai boxing and wrestling, to explore leadership skills. The young people gain valuable life skills related to goal setting, anger management, and self-care. And they also have a lot of fun.

‘We bring rangatahi together and offer mutual support and a sense of belonging,’ says Barney. The Maka Leadership and school holiday programmes are open to all high-school-aged young men. Barney says the organisation doesn’t have the resources to cater to young women at the moment. However, they would love to do so in the future.

Barney says that around 200 youths have benefitted from Brotherhood Continues' programmes.

The Brotherhood is based on Henderson’s Brick Street. And as a charitable trust, funding is always in short supply, especially for running costs. The organisation applied to the 2023 Your West Support Fund and received $10,000.

It’s clear the funding has made a vital difference to this small but much-needed community organisation.

Barney says the money has been spent on a wide range of operational costs, including rent and replacing old sports equipment.

In addition, it’s helped cover the costs of a professional trainer and youth workers. Barney says that without the help, the programmes couldn’t continue. ‘There’s only so much goodwill and volunteer hours to go around. Our people already contribute so much,’ he advises.

Now, thanks to the Your West Support Fund, Brotherhood Continues has greater financial certainty. Barney says the organisation can now focus on the real work of walking alongside young people.

The April school holiday programme has just finished and was another huge success. The next Maka Leadership programme is due to get underway in term two. Follow the Maka Leadership programme on Facebook to learn more and stay updated with the latest news.
