The Trusts - History

Portage and Waitakere Licensing Trusts were established in the 1970s. In both cases, the people in the area voted for a ‘wet’ area (i.e. to sell liquor) but to retain control over its sale.

Competition in the sale of liquor in West Auckland is robust. The Trusts do not control liquor licences in the area. Liquor licences are granted after application to the relevant local council. Anyone can apply.
