The Trusts - History

Portage and Waitakere Licensing Trusts were established in the 1970s. In both cases, the people in the area voted for a ‘wet’ area (i.e. to sell liquor) but to retain control over its sale.

That means - Portage and Waitakere Trusts own and run hotels and taverns in their areas. They also own and run bars, licensed restaurants and offer accommodation. In addition, both trusts retain the sole right to retail liquor (‘off licences’) in their geographical areas, excluding manufacturers.

Brand names through which The Trusts sell are household names in West Auckland. King Dick’s and Local Liquor retail alcohol as well as specialty stores West Harbour Wines & Spirits and Titirangi Wines & Spirits and of course our outlet stores Outlet Owairaka and Outlet Central. The hotels owned by The Trusts include Henderson’s Lincoln Green. Bars include Spiders, Players, Riccochet, Legends, The Hangar, Mainstreet and Bar 159. Pool bars are The Cue Club and Miss Q's. Restaurants are Bricklane and Black Salt in New Lynn, The Marina at West Harbour, Origins at Westgate and Icon at Henderson.  Or you might just prefer a drink in one of our traditional taverns - Te Atatu or Western Lights.

The Trusts also draw income from the gaming machines they operate in hotels and bars. All net proceeds from these gaming machines flow straight back to the community, through The Trusts Charitable Foundation.
